What is Counselling?
What is Counselling?
Counselling is a way of enabling choice or change or of reducing confusion.
Acceptance and respect are essentials for a counsellor and, as the relationship develops, so too does trust between the counsellor and client, enabling the client to look at many aspects of their life, their relationships and themselves which they may not have considered or been able to face before.
The Counsellor may help the client to examine in detail the behaviour or situations which are proving troublesome and to find anarea where it would be possible to initiate some change as a start. The counsellor may help the client to look at the options open to them and help them to decide the best for them.
Who is it for ?
Anyone can benefit from counselling. We all have times in our lives when we need to talk and be listened to by someone other than family and friends.Counselling provides this opportunity in a confidential environment.
How does it work?
The counselling process helps individuals develop awareness, understanding and insights into their own anxieties ,helping them to overcome self-defeating patterns of behaviour and effect beneficial change and growth and discover their inner resources and strength to cope more effectively with decision making and life. These changes can build self- confidence and a positive sense of well being.
How many sessions required?
This will depend on the individual client's needs. Counselling can be long or short term; six to twelve sessions is generally considered short term; long term is open ended. This will be agreed at the start of therapy between client and Counsellor.
How often are the sessions?
Sessions are usually weekly for the duration of 50 minutes. The first session often referred to as the "assessment " may take a little longer. This sesion is important because it enables the client and counsellor to explore together what the client wants help with. However this does not mean the client is committed to any further sessions unless they choose to do so.
